Discover "Ukhamba," a captivating installation by artist and architect Germane Barnes, presented by MOAD (Museum of Art and Design). Ukhamba, the second in a series of annual commissioned MOAD Pavilions, is a ten-foot-tall circular structure featuring four arched entrances, constructed from curved wooden elements stacked in horizontal layers.
About the Installation: Ukhamba invites visitors to step inside and gather within its unique structure, offering glimpses of the surrounding plaza and urban landscape. Inspired by Barnes's experiences in South Africa and Miami, the installation reflects on the appropriation of African influences in Western architecture. Combining elements of traditional basket weaving and tropical breeze walls, Ukhamba serves as a thought-provoking exploration of cultural intersections and architectural aesthetics.
