What happens when one of the most influential football players of all time shocks the world and joins a Major League Soccer club in sunny South Florida? Just one quick glance at Instagram will tell you. After news of Lionel Messi wanting to join Inter Miami CF, many fans have rushed to the soccer club’s Instagram account and boosted its follower count to new heights.
The page had around one million followers before news broke — a number that had already grown as rumors of Messi’s arrival began to circulate around social media. But once the move was made official on Wednesday, the club’s Instagram page has reached 6 million followers so far!
It’s only natural, as Messi himself is the second-most followed person on the platform with 469 million followers (first is fellow soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo). But at 6 mill, Inter Miami is now the most followed sports page among any NFL, MLB, NHL or MLS team. For instance, the highest followed NFL team are the New England Patriots with 4.9 million and the MLB team with the most followers are the New York Yankees with around three million.
Inter Miami has also surpassed the most-followed MLS team, LA Galaxy, which currently has 1.5 million followers. We can’t say if and when the club’s follower count will stop growing, but it sure is growing quickly.
