Martin Short and Meryl Streep reunited on the red carpet at the season 4 premiere of Only Murders in the Building, held at the Paramount Lot in Los Angeles on Thursday, Aug. 22. The duo, whose close friendship has sparked romance rumors in the past, showcased their strong bond as they posed for the cameras with warm smiles.
Streep, 74, looked effortlessly chic in a black and white printed Stella McCartney dress, styled by Micaela Erlanger. The elegant ensemble was accentuated by a wide belt cinched at her waist, slip-on flats, and a matching white clutch, striking a perfect balance between sophistication and comfort. Short, 73, opted for a classic black suit paired with a burgundy tie featuring subtle grey designs, exuding timeless charm.
Their appearance together comes nearly eight months after Short and Streep sparked romance speculation at the 2024 Golden Globes, where they were seen enjoying each other's company. However, Short was quick to set the record straight, with his rep telling at the time that the pair are "just very good friends, nothing more." The actor further addressed the rumors on Bill Maher's podcast, emphasizing, "We are not a couple, we are just very close friends."
In May, Short commented on the ongoing interest in his relationship with Streep, who had separated from her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, six years prior. He acknowledged the intrigue surrounding show business relationships, saying, "It's always interesting. Show business relationships and spec." When asked if he felt uncomfortable with the speculation, Short confidently replied, "No," and went on to praise Streep, stating, "She's fabulous. There's no one who doesn't adore her."
Despite denying any romantic involvement, Short admitted that he felt a bit more nervous than usual when heading to set with Streep during her stint on Only Murders in the Building for season 3. "I remember driving to work and thought, ‘Gee, this is odd. I'm a little bit [nervous]. Oh, of course! I'm going to do a two-person scene with Meryl,’" he shared.
However, his nerves quickly vanished, thanks to the laid-back atmosphere on set. "It’s a very, very, very loose, fun-filled set," Short explained. "I think everyone has the same review of that working on the show — that it's really fun and loose — and that's kind of the philosophy of Steve [Martin], the way he's always worked, and so is Selena [Gomez]."
He added, "Everyone works in joy and happiness, because we’re lucky people."
As fans eagerly anticipate the premiere of Only Murders in the Building season 4 on Aug. 27 on Hulu, it's clear that the chemistry between Short and Streep, both on and off the screen, continues to be a highlight of the series—built on the foundation of a strong, platonic friendship.
