Renowned swimwear designer Natasha Tonić is thrilled to unveil her groundbreaking new collection, “Coral City,” at the prestigious Paraiso Miami Swim Week 2023. This innovative line is the result of a collaborative effort with Miami's coral restoration trailblazers, Coral Morphologic, and aims to shine a spotlight on the critical threats endangering coral reefs today, such as microfiber pollution and the harmful impacts of sunscreens that are not safe for reefs.
Natasha Tonić, known for her environmental advocacy through fashion, articulates her motivation: “I am driven to create collections that convey an environmental message, and with ‘Coral City,’ the focus is on the global crisis facing coral reefs. Our intention is to raise awareness and provide tangible support to these vital ecosystems. To achieve this, we’ve formed partnerships with Coral Morphologic, a team of local coral experts in Miami, pledging to donate 10% of our sales proceeds to them, and an additional 10% to Ocean Gardener, an Indonesian non-profit organization dedicated to ocean conservation.”
Deepening her commitment to ecological sustainability, Tonić pledges to plant a coral in the Bali reefs for every swimsuit sold from this collection. The designs within the “Coral City” collection draw inspiration from the vibrant reefs around Miami and the pioneering efforts of Coral Morphologic, particularly highlighting their Coral City Camera initiative. The restoration efforts in Bali are carried out by Ocean Gardener, utilizing a novel technique that employs organic materials like ropes and wooden stakes to rehabilitate damaged coral reefs, thereby avoiding plastic use.
In recognition of her innovative approach to sustainable fashion, Natasha Tonić has been honored with the title of SI Swimsuit’s 2023 Sustainable Swimsuit Designer of the Year. This accolade celebrates Tonić's significant contributions to promoting sustainability within the fashion industry, particularly in the realm of swimwear design, by integrating environmental consciousness with style and functionality.
