Step into the vibrant world of the Harlem Renaissance with "Silhouettes: Image and Word in the Harlem Renaissance," on display at The Wolfsonian-FIU until June 23, 2024. This exhibition delves into a flourishing era of literary, visual, and musical arts from the 1920s to the '40s, a period that reshaped the portrayal of Black life and culture.
Curated by Christopher Norwood, founder of Hampton Art Lovers, and organized by The Wolfsonian-FIU, "Silhouettes" focuses on the collaborations between artists and writers that produced illustrated books. These works were pivotal in challenging derogatory stereotypes and asserting the African American community's right to self-determination.
Norwood worked closely with Shawn Christian, a professor of English at Florida International University, and the staff of The Wolfsonian-FIU to bring this exhibition to life. Sponsored by Cowles Charitable Trust, the Tamara L. Harris Foundation, and the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau Art of Black Miami, "Silhouettes" is an essential experience for those interested in the cultural and artistic heritage of the Harlem Renaissance.
Through a curated selection of artworks and literary pieces, visitors will witness the dynamic interplay of image and word that characterized this transformative period. The exhibition not only highlights the artistic achievements of the era but also underscores the enduring impact of the Harlem Renaissance on contemporary culture and society.
