Travis Kelce Says He Was 'Shocked' Ryan Murphy Gave Him a Role in "Grotesquerie": 'I Feel Like an Amateur'

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is stepping into new territory as he joins the cast of Ryan Murphy's FX series "Grotesquerie." In a candid discussion on the May 14 episode of his New Heights podcast, Kelce opened up about his unexpected acting debut and the surreal experience of working with seasoned professionals.

Kelce, 34, who stars opposite Niecy Nash-Betts in the series, shared his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity given by the renowned writer and director. "Ryan Murphy is an unbelievable writer, director, producer, all of the above, man. There's nothing he can't do, and everybody's just been so helpful in making me feel comfortable," he said.

Despite his enthusiasm, Kelce admitted feeling like a "jabroni" among the experienced cast. "I feel like an amateur. And, uh, I haven't gotten fired yet so we're doing good," he joked. "They haven't told me to f---ing kick rocks after the first week, so it's been awesome."

Kelce expressed his amazement at being chosen for such a significant role. "I was kinda blown away and kinda, like, shocked that he was willing to give me a role like this, because it is a big role on the show," he revealed. Murphy's confidence in Kelce's abilities helped ease his nerves. "He seemed very confident that I'd be able to do this and he kinda injected that in me the first conversation that we had. So hopefully I don't bomb this for him."

Kelce's transition from the football field to the film set has been eye-opening. He explained the challenges of memorizing lines and staying tuned into the scenes, describing the process as a significant shift from his NFL routine. "I'm just taking it scene by scene and trying to make sure that I remember my lines. I'm very amateur at this," he added.

While Kelce remained tight-lipped about specific plot details, he hinted at the intriguing nature of "Grotesquerie." "I don't want to give too much away, but the name itself can tell you it's quite a mystery and every scene has just been so much fun to be in."

On May 7, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that Kelce would be joining Murphy's latest FX project. Shortly after, Niecy Nash-Betts shared a video clip on social media, excitedly announcing Kelce's involvement. "Guys, guess who I am working with on Grotesquerie?" she teased before revealing Kelce, who exclaimed, "Jumping into new territory with Niecy!"

"We on site!" Nash-Betts added. Her caption read: "This is what happens when WINNERS link up!! @killatrav Welcome to Grotesquerie."

Kelce's new venture into acting has certainly piqued the interest of fans, eager to see how the NFL star will fare in his new role. With Murphy's guidance and the support of his co-stars, Kelce is poised to make a memorable impact on "Grotesquerie."
