Shakira is openly discussing her previous relationship with long-term companion Gerard Piqué.
In a recent interview with The Sunday Times, the 47-year-old artist shared insights into her life alongside Piqué, 37, before their 11-year partnership concluded in June 2022.
“I paused my career to support Gerard and his football career,” Shakira mentioned about her former partner, with whom she has two sons — Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9.
"The 'Hips Don't Lie' artist, who is about to drop her new album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, this month, noted, “There were many sacrifices made for love."
Shakira and Piqué's paths crossed in 2010 during the filming of Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" music video.
Subsequently, they quelled speculation about their relationship by acknowledging it publicly on social media in March 2011.
In January 2013, they celebrated the birth of their first child, followed by the arrival of their second son in January 2015.
Following an 11-year union, they disclosed their decision to part ways through a mutual statement in June 2022. "It is with regret that we announce our separation," the announcement stated. "At this time, we request privacy for the sake of our children, who remain our top concern. We appreciate your understanding and respect in advance."
Last year, Shakira opened up in a Billboard cover story about her steadfast belief in lifelong commitment during her relationship with Piqué.
"The foundation of my life was my home, my family. I held on to the belief in 'till death do us part.' That was the dream I believed in," the Colombian icon shared with the magazine.
"My parents have been together for, I think, 50 years, and their love is as passionate as it was on the first day—truly one of a kind and irreplaceable," she elaborated. "So, I know that it’s achievable."
Shakira then noted: "That was my aspiration for myself and my kids, but unfortunately, it didn’t turn out that way."
